According to Finances Online, about 8 million student beds accounted for about 12% of the total number of US rental units. While online classes took over for a few years, things are returning to normal, and many college students are moving out of their parent’s homes and either into a dorm or off-campus housing to get some freedom and be on their own. Are you considering your options before going off to college in the fall? Continue reading below to see why it could be more beneficial for you to live off campus.

Off-campus housing is when you decide not to live in student housing on campus, typically in dorm rooms, and opt to live in a house or apartment close to the campus with roommates. This usually happens during your junior or senior year to save money, but many students choose to live off campus from the start of their freshman year.

Gain Responsibility

Off-campus student housing allows you to gain responsibility, such as paying rent, keeping the place clean, respecting other people’s boundaries, and paying additional bills, like water, heat, and electricity. You’ll learn how to budget as you’re trying to pay your bills and make sure there’s enough food in your place. With a full kitchen, you’ll also learn how to cook your food instead of eating on campus or eating healthy fast food.

Handle Difficult Situations

As mentioned above, you’re gaining a lot of responsibility moving into an apartment, where you’ll learn how to handle difficult situations. With your apartment, you’ll have to find a professional to fix things like your appliances, spray for bugs, repair a broken window or door, and lots more! You also have to decide who does what chores and create a schedule that allows everyone to do what they want without disrupting anyone’s schedule. With student housing, everything is taken care of for you. You would call to let them know the issue, and it would get taken care of while you’re in class.

With anything in life, there are pros and cons to your choices. It’s important to weigh your options and decide if living off campus is better for you than on-campus student housing. Are you looking for student apartments? Contact us at Jerusalem Management today!
